What Is AI Search Optimisation?
AI search optimisation is the work of making your website easy for artificial intelligence tools to find, understand and recommend. When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews a question, those AI systems pull answers from web pages they trust. If your site is clear, accurate and well structured, you're more likely to be one of them.
You'll hear it called a few names. Generative engine optimisation, written as generative engine optimization (GEO) in US guides, is the most common. Answer engine optimization (AEO) and AI SEO mean much the same thing, and AI search engines are sometimes called answer engines or generative engines. GEO SEO is simply GEO and traditional SEO done together. The labels matter less than the goal: being the answer, wherever your customers search.
For a small or medium business, this isn't a replacement for search engine rankings. It builds on them. Most of what helps you show up in AI answers also helps you rank in Google search and convert visitors once they arrive.
How generative AI search works
Generative AI search tools use large language models to write an answer, rather than just listing links. Many AI powered search systems search the web in real time, read the most relevant sites and summarise them, often citing their sources. Others lean on what they learned from AI training data. Either way, AI systems interpret your content the way a careful reader would: is it clear, is it specific, does it match the user intent behind the question, and can it be trusted? The AI algorithms differ from tool to tool, but they reward the same things.
AI search vs traditional search
Traditional search engines show search engine results pages, and the user picks a link. AI driven search and generative search give a direct answer, sometimes with a few links underneath. That changes user behaviour. Fewer people click through for simple user queries, but those who do are often further along and more ready to buy. Generative AI search features like Google's AI Mode and AI Overviews now sit alongside the organic search results, so you need to be visible in both.
