What Is AI Search Optimisation?

AI search optimisation is the work of making your business easy for AI tools to find, understand, trust and recommend. When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode a question like "who's a good accountant near me?" or "best supplier for steel sections in the North West", you want your business in the answer, with a link.

You'll also hear it called generative engine optimisation, GEO SEO, answer engine optimisation (AEO) or AI SEO. The names differ, but the goal is the same: improve your AI visibility, so generative engines mention and cite you rather than a competitor.

It sits alongside traditional search, not instead of it. Google search results still drive a lot of enquiries for most SMEs. AI search adds a second place to be seen, and the two increasingly overlap.

How AI Search Engines Choose What to Cite

AI search engines work differently from traditional search engines. Most of these AI powered search systems run on large language models. Instead of showing ten blue links, they read a range of sources, then write ai generated answers that summarise them. Some AI engines also draw on what the model learned from its AI training data. Some sources get named and linked in the AI responses. Most don't, and AI generated responses can change from one day to the next.

Nobody outside the AI companies knows exactly how each system decides. But the public guidance, including Google's own advice on AI features in Google Search, points to the same things that have always mattered in good SEO work, with a few extra emphases.

  • Clear answers: pages that answer real user queries directly, in plain language, are easier for AI systems to quote.
  • Trust signals: reviews, mentions on other reputable sites and quality backlinks show you're a real, established business.
  • Expertise: content that shows first-hand experience and knowledge, which Google calls E-E-A-T.
  • Structure: headings, lists, FAQs and structured data that help machines understand what each page is about.
  • Access: AI crawlers and search engines must be able to reach and read your pages.

E-E-A-T and why it matters more in AI search

E-E-A-T stands for experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust. AI driven search engines need confidence before they recommend a business, so real names, real addresses, honest service descriptions and genuine reviews count. We help you show these properly on your site and across the web.

GEO vs SEO: Do You Need Both?

Yes, and the good news is that most of the work helps both. Strong technical SEO, useful content and a trusted reputation improve your search rankings and your AI search visibility at the same time.

Where GEO focuses differently is on how answers are written and where you're mentioned. Traditional SEO strategy chases keyword rankings and click through rates on a results page. Generative engine optimisation also asks: when an AI tool summarises this topic, does it understand who you are, what you do and why you're a good choice?

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. AI tools lean heavily on content that already ranks and on sources that search engines trust. If your SEO is weak, your AI visibility usually is too. We treat both SEO and GEO as one plan, so you don't pay twice for overlapping work.

Our AI SEO Audit

Every project starts with an AI SEO audit. It's a fixed fee, quoted up front, and gives you a clear picture of where you stand and what to fix first. This is where the core idea comes in: AI tools to check answers at scale, an experienced SEO specialist to judge what matters, and your own data so the fixes match real demand.

1. AI visibility check

We ask the AI tools your customers use a set of real questions about your services and location, then record who gets mentioned and cited. You see which AI answers include you, which don't, and which competitors appear instead.

2. Website audit and technical SEO

A full website audit covers site health and overall website health, website speed, core web vitals, indexing issues, broken links, internal links, meta tags and other on page issues. We check that AI crawlers aren't blocked by accident and that your structured data is valid.

3. Content and search intent review

We use keyword research, search volume and your Google Search Console search data to see what people actually ask. Then we check whether your pages match that search intent and user intent clearly enough to be quoted, and where content quality needs work.

4. Reputation and mentions

We look at reviews, directory listings, industry sites and press mentions that AI models draw on. AI mentions often come from these third-party sources, not just your own site.

05 / 08

How We Improve Your AI Search Visibility

The audit becomes a prioritised plan. Some fixes are quick, like structured data, clearer page titles or unblocking crawlers. Others take longer, like new content creation or earning mentions on trusted sites.

  • Answer-ready pages: rewrite key service and FAQ pages so they answer customer questions plainly.
  • On page SEO: headings, meta tags, internal links and relevant images that support each page's topic.
  • Structured data: organisation, local business, service, product and FAQ markup.
  • Content strategy: new guides and comparison pages built around real customer questions.
  • Reputation: a plan for reviews, listings and mentions that AI tools and search engines trust.
  • Engagement: clearer pages that improve user engagement once people arrive.

Measuring AI Visibility and Search Performance

AI search is harder to measure than traditional rankings, so we keep it simple and honest. Each month we re-run your key questions across the main AI tools and track how often you're mentioned and cited, compared with competitors.

Alongside that we report the familiar numbers from Google Search Console and analytics: impressions, clicks, organic search results and search performance for your priority pages. Together they show whether your website's visibility is growing across both traditional and AI driven search.

We don't chase an SEO score from an automated SEO report generator. Tools that manage SEO checks are useful for spotting issues, but SEO success is measured in enquiries and sales, not tool grades.

Generative AI Tools and Digital Marketing

Generative AI is changing how people search, but the basics of digital marketing still apply. Be clear about what you do, prove you're good at it, and be present where your customers look. AI search optimisation just adds a few more of those places.

If you also run social media marketing, email or paid search, AI visibility work fits alongside it. Consistent messages across channels help AI models build an accurate picture of your business.

Costs, Timescales and Who It's For

The AI SEO audit is a fixed fee, quoted up front. Ongoing AI search optimisation, including fixes, content and monthly AI visibility reporting, starts from £750 a month and you can stop at the end of any month.

Some technical fixes can show in AI answers within weeks. Earning citations and trust is ongoing work, which is why we track it monthly. We won't promise rankings or AI mentions, because nobody controls how AI tools answer.

We work with SMEs of 1 to 250 people across the whole UK, from our base in Rainford, St Helens. It suits businesses where customers research before they buy: professional services, trades, B2B suppliers, clinics and online shops.

FAQ

Common questions

What is GEO?

Generative engine optimisation: improving how often AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini mention and cite your business.

Is GEO different from SEO?

It builds on SEO. Strong, well-structured pages still matter, but AI tools also weigh clear answers, reviews and mentions elsewhere.

How long until we see results?

Some fixes show within weeks; earning citations is ongoing, so we track it monthly.

How do I optimise for AI search?

Start with strong SEO basics, then make your key pages answer real questions clearly, add structured data, keep AI crawlers unblocked and build reviews and mentions on trusted sites.

Can ChatGPT do an SEO audit?

It can suggest ideas if you paste in a page, but it can't crawl your whole site, read your Search Console data or check how AI tools answer about you. A proper audit needs real data and judgement.

Is SEO still relevant with AI?

Yes. AI tools rely heavily on content that search engines already trust, so good SEO remains the foundation for AI visibility.

What is AEO vs GEO vs SEO?

SEO improves rankings in search results. AEO focuses on being the direct answer to a question. GEO focuses on being mentioned and cited by generative AI tools. In practice they overlap heavily.

Can you promise we'll appear in ChatGPT or Google AI answers?

No. Nobody can, because the AI companies decide how answers are written. We improve the things that make citations more likely and track the results honestly every month.
